Spa Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy in Lancashire

There is only a handful of Spa Hotels across the UK that have the foresight to employ a Clinical Hypnotherapist. I am lucky enough to work at Ribby Hall Spa Hotel in Lancashire offering hypnotherapy treatments.

As 2016 comes to a close I have worked with a range of amazing clients who have shown that it is possible to make fantastic changes in their lives. It has been an enjoyment and an honour to support these clients on their journey to change and ultimately see them leaving me with more positivity and a greater level of happiness and satisfaction.

Miracles can't be guaranteed...but what I can assure you of is my dedication to ensure clients receive the best I can possibly give. As a therapist this can sometimes you feeling a little frazzled at the end of the day, but the satisfaction of knowing the difference I have made makes it all worthwhile!

There is still a stigma attached to hypnosis and hypnotherapy and I think many clients arrive really not knowing what to expect. Most clients feel reassured from our first meeting understanding that hypnotherapy is a safe and natural process. Any fears are always alleviated from the start and client questions answered as thoroughly as possible.

The 5 Star reviews Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy have received speak volumes:

"I only had 1 session before going on holiday and I felt a thousand times better, my family couldn't get over how relaxed on the run to my holiday I was and how calm I was on the flight, compared to my usual stressed and worried self. I can't wait to book in again to finish my last few sessions. Thanks so much xx"

"Gemma is an amazing hypnotherapist. I am attending her therapy course for relaxation each week and find I them beneficial to my well being in many ways. Gemma is reassuring and friendly. Her voice is like a salve!
If anyone is unsure about hypnotherapy as I was at first, don't be, with Gemma you feel safe and in control at all times. I can't wait for the next session."

Hypnotherapy can help with so many issues. Please give me a call to discuss your requirements. As we prepare to welcome in 2017 - now is the time to book an appointment to ensure those New Year's Resolutions last longer than a month :) !

Thank You & Wishing you all the Best for 2017

Pregnancy Calm

You can now enjoy a blissful hour of Relaxation and Baby Bonding with me Gemma Webster, in-house hypnotherapist at Ribby Spa. There are many benefits of pregnancy relaxation: time out can really give you the opportunity to feel refreshed and restored.

Why not combine a pregnancy massage with hypnotherapy and really spoil yourself!

Hypnotherapy takes you in to a state of rest and repair giving you and your baby a well earned break away from the stresses of life. Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy specialises in hypnosis for birth and will work with you to address any specific concerns and alleviate anxiety. The amazing effects of hypnosis can really help to reduce aches and tenderness, reduce blood pressure and even alleviate morning sickness - ultimately promoting a positive mind set for pregnancy and birth.

“As a hypnobirthing Mum, I have firsthand experience of the difference that hypnotherapy can make. Both of my babies were Calm & Contented! I truly believe that they were born already conditioned to relax. I practiced hypnosis so often during pregnancy that my babies had heard the same relaxing music in the womb and felt my own relaxation response many times. After birth, they both settled really well whenever they heard the same track. Music is such powerful and emotional trigger especially when combined with hypnotic techniques. Of course I am bias, but I can’t recommend hypnotherapy enough!” Gemma Webster

Pregnancy Calm is specifically designed for time out and baby bonding. Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy also offers a Hypnobirthing program for natural birth preparation. For more information email hypnotherapy@calmandcontented.co.uk

Trying to Conceive...

Unexplained Infertility

Many women seek out hypnotherapy because they have the intention of becoming pregnant and after a time nothing seems to be happening. Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy makes no guarantees that hypnotherapy will enable you to become pregnant, in the same way that medical treatments such as IVF can't make promises.

It would be wonderful to have a crystal ball - but no-one knows what the future holds. The miracle of life is very much in the hands of the gods, higher force, force of nature or whatever beliefs you hold. At Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy I maintain that the intention of become pregnant is very important - after all it is the reason you are taking a certain journey. However, our aim is to focus upon the changes that need to be made which will enable you to become more fertile. The emphasis of the sessions is to put you in a more fertile state - changes may be made on a  mental, physical or emotional level, or you may require support with lifestyle changes for example stopping smoking or weight control.

The Fertile Body Method aims to increase fertility by identifying and resolving issues that may be preventing conception. There are issues that you may be consciously aware of, or blocks to conception which may manifest in the unconscious part of the mind.

The Fertile Body Method has treated may clients with a range of underlying fears and unresolved issues:
  • Fears about pregnancy
  • Fears of birth
  • Parenthood and the ability to cope
  • Concerns about work versus family life
  • Unresolved issues relating to past miscarriage or termination
  • Past grief
  • Childhood experience
  • Relationship issues

Each woman is different - with different wants, needs and expectations. The best way to find out whether hypnotherapy is right for you, is to give me a call for an informal and confidential chat. Sessions are help at Susan Walker Associates, Hardhorn Road, Poulton-le-Fylde and The Spa on the Breck, Breck Road, Poulton-le-Fylde.

Listening to your femininity within...

Your Menstrual Cycle: Pregnancy, Infertility and more...

How much do you know about your menstrual cycle?

For most women they view their monthly bleed as something less than positive. An inconvenience, messy and more often than not uncomfortable. With this mind set, its hardly surprising that a women's period is known as 'the curse' - Yet how helpful is it to view such a natural and wonderful process with such negative connotation?

An understanding of the female body can help us to reconnect with ourselves on multiple levels. Whatever stage of life: puberty, trying for a baby, pregnant, menopausal or resolving tensions. It can be empowering for a woman to embrace femininity rather than viewing the menstrual cycle as something that should be 'put up with' or 'swept under the carpet'.

Certainly if you are trying to concieve: biological and emotional understanding of your own unique cycle is so important. And once pregnant imagine how much easier it is to listen to your body and embrace the changes of pregnancy, if you are already accustomised to tuning in to your body. Techniques such as hypnobirthing can the help strengthen and focus your mind and body for birth - building and bonding on what you already instinctively know from within.

Understanding physical and emotional changes throughout your cycle can help with self nurture - by listening to your body you can learn when it is time to eat, drink, rest and take that all important 'me time' away from the rest of the world. 'Me time' sounds like a bit of a cliche these days! But time out can really give a woman the opportunity to reflect on the month past and prepare for the month ahead.

Emotions are all part of humanity and where once you might have viewed irritability or tears or sadness during the lead up to your monthly bleed, such emotions may now be viewed through different eyes. This purge of negative emotion may be a reflection of the experiences you have had that month - reminents of unexpressed anger and unfinished business. When these emotions are encouraged to surface: a woman may feel cleansed and refreshed. Similar to that feeling, when you have a good cry over a sad movie. Dealing with locked in emotion then paves the path to move forward - with energy, enthusiam and positivity.

So not only does understanding and instinctly responding to our natural cycle help us to celebrate womanhood - it can also help to improve conditions and wellbeing. It is suggested by some experts that when our own natural tendancies and rhythms are not honoured that illness can follow. This is certainly a reason to start and pay attention to our bodies, emotions and thoughts and really start to give ourselves the self nurture that we deserve. Menstruation can be truly healing. To read more about this fasinating subject read: 'Her Blood is Gold, Awakening to the Wisdom of Menstration' by Lara Owen.

The Perfect Birth

What does perfect birthing mean to you?

Each Mother is unique, every birth is unique so it is impossible to generalise about the perfect birth. For some it may be a natural birth, a medicated birth, a water birth, a hospital birth, an active birth, a caesarean birth or a home birth.

A perfect birth would be one where the Mother-to-be has a choice. From the first choices she makes about how…where… and when… she is going to birth her baby - through to point that she is left to get on with motherhood.

Imagine a birth where you truly feel in control. You are confident enough to question the decisions of your midwife. You feel empowered to bring your baby into the world in your way. You remain calm throughout labour regardless of whether the reality of birth meets your expectations.

The phrase ‘knowledge is power’ springs to mind. For those women who want to take control of their own birth experience; knowing about how the birthing body works and the birth process will contribute towards a positive experience.

A perfect birth would be cherished and remembered with warmth and pride. Birth is one of life’s greatest gifts and for many women one of the most amazing moments of their life. A birth where Mum would look back and say she would do it all again tomorrow.

Does Hypnobirthing work?

Does hypnosis mean I will have a calm birth?

Hypnotherapy is becoming main stream. If you are pregnant, hypnobirthing might be an option that you are considering... But will Natal Hypnotherapy meet your expectations?

At Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy the first thing I do is find out more about you and your expectations - this is even before you have enrolled on the course.

I am happy to chat at length about your ideas and expectations of birth. Many women have lots of questions before they commit to hypnobirthing.

Nothing in life is certain. If I had a magic wand - I would say 'Yes! Hypnobirthing will work for you and you will have the beautiful experience that you are hoping for'. Unfortunately, Clinical Hypnotherapy doesn't cover the same material as the magic circle does and I don't own a magic wand.

As a realist, I know that life is unpredictable and it is impossible to make guarantees. I also know that there are measures that can be taken to ensure that life runs as smoothly as possible.

For example:
  • If you want a healthy heart - you could stop smoking
  • If you want to lose weight - you could eat healthier food or exercise
  • If you want a positive birth - you could take effective birth preparation classes

Positive Outcome

Every women has a different style of birthing, each birth is unique. Natal Hypnotherapy teaches techniques that transcend the birth outcome. That is: Natal Hypnotherapy can be used no matter how your birth unfolds. You may be planning a natural birth, but for unforeseen reasons, you may require medical intervention. Natal Hypnotherapyhelps to reframe your perspective for a positive and calm experience regardless of the outcome.

The peace of mind which Natal Hypnotherapy can bring to women before birth is worth its 'weight in gold'. Pregnant ladies all over the world are learning to trust their primal instincts and trust their own bodies to do what women have done since the dawn of time. Some women can feel acute anxiety during pregnancy. Regular practice of hypnosis can help both Mum and Dad-to-be to feel so much more confident, relaxed and in control. So months before your labour and birth, it is entirely possible to feel stress-free and enjoy your pregnancy.

Natal Hypnotherapy™ workshops are accredited by the Royal College of Midwives and the workshops are run in several NHS trusts. In addition Natal Hypnotherapy™ is the preferred method of hypnosis for birth by birth professionals, being recommended by over 3000 birth professionals.

If  you are pregnant and considering hypnobirthing: for further information please call Gemma Webster at Calm & Contented Hypnotherapy 07729275909.

Hypnobirthing is AMAZING!!!

Hypnobirthing on One Born Every Minute

#Oneborn

Last night on Channel 4, One Born Every Minute gave Mums-to-be the chance to see how is it completely possible to have a calm and relaxing birth. I must admit One Born isn't my regular viewing, as I believe it fuels fear and reaffirms to women that the should be birthing on their back (This is not the case!).

An active birth can really help women have a quicker labour - if you think about it logically, you are working with gravity as opposed to 'pushing up hill' when on your back. Nadine demonstrated beautifully 'how it should be done' using Natal Hypnotherapy™ techniques. She used the birth ball demonstrating how gravity can help the baby gain an optimum position.

Unfortunately due to editing, not all of the techniques were shown on last nights program, but Nadine's birth was undeniably magical and empowering. Certainly when contrasted to other adrenaline fuelled births in the series. It would have been nice to see 321 relax in action, birth music and so on...

Birth Partner

Last nights episode of One Born focused on the importance of the birth partner. The people that a birthing women meets along the way is integral to her state of mind. Positive support can make all the difference. It was evident that all the birth partners on the show were very loving, but as one midwife stated it is difficult for a birth partner to know how he fits in...

Natal Hypnotherapy™ birth preparation dedicates an entire section to helping the Dad-to-be understand how he can be actively involved in birth and in essence - be useful! Nadine had a calm and peaceful water birth. Paul, her partner chose to get into the pool. That is personal choice - Natal Hypnotherapy™ never prescribes what should or shouldn't be done or, what you are or are not allowed to do. The course is focused around empowering the couple to have a positive experience and deal with labour and birth - no matter how it unfolds.

I hope that for any pregnant women that were viewing - that they are inspired to find out more about hypnobirthing.

Calm & Contented Birthing

It is completely possible to have a positive birth experience. It is such a shame that in today's culture there is the expectation that birth is going to be a scary and horrendous ordeal. Birth is such a precious thing and in my personal opinion (and the 100,000's of women who have used Natal Hypnotherapy™) it can be a wonderful, bonding and empowering event for both Mum and Dad. Even the midwifery staff on the unit were effected by the magic of Natal Hypnotherapy™ - some almost baffled by Nadine's approach and the depth of her relaxed state and in tears at the beauty of the moment.

Hypnobirthing Lancashire

Lancashire Self-Hypnosis for Birth Trials

Dr Soo Downe at the University of Central Lancashire is running SHIP Trials (Self-Hypnosis for Intrapartum Pain management).

Summary of Hypnosis Trials

"Self-hypnosis is a way of training the mind and body to experience things differently.

It usually involves listening to a voice on a tape or CD which gives hints and suggestions about how to change unhelpful ways of thinking.

By listening to the CD regularly the belief is that the listener will ‘absorb’ the suggestions and their experience will change.

It is sometimes used by health professionals to help people give up smoking or to reduce their fear of flying.

Recent studies have shown that self-hypnosis can be used successfully to treat the pain associated with chronic gastro-intestinal complaints like Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Crohn’s Disease.

In this study we would like to find out if self-hypnosis could help women to deal with the pain associated with labour and childbirth.

Our theory is that if women feel more relaxed and in control during labour then they are less likely to experience intense pain and less likely to need medical assistance or even surgery.

So far there have been few studies conducted in this area and most of them have been small or of poor quality.

However, the results have been encouraging and we would like to find out if this would be an effective way of providing pain relief to pregnant women in the UK."

The proposed completion date for these trials was June 2013 so results should be expected into the public domain soon.

'Just Relax'

The following article was published by the telegraph at the time the trial started.

"A new trial into ‘hypnobirthing’ will assess whether women can give birth happily without painkillers. But will expectant mothers will ever forgo the epidural and learn to 'just relax'"

Hypnobirthing Lancashire

The Results

The SHIP trial should give an excellent clinical insight into the effectiveness of self-hypnosis. It should be noted that antenatal classes such as Natal Hypnotherapy™ and Hypnobirthing give much more than hypnosis alone.

Natal Hypnotherapy

Hypnosis for birth is just one powerful element included in Natal Hypnotherapy™. The course teaches many other tools and techniques for managing birth and labour - thus empowering a woman to have a positive birth experience.

Preston Royal - Home from Home

Preston Mum's will soon be given the opportunity to give birth in a brand new midwifery-led birth centre at Preston Royal Hospital. A midwifery-led centre tends to offer more homely and relaxing environment than a hospital. Away from medicalised procedure midwives are able to offer a women-centred approach conducive to natural birth.
The centre is to offer en-suite rooms, a number of birthing pools and overnight accommodation for the birthing partner: enabling support and bonding in the precious first hours of the baby's life.

I wonder what Sue Radford thinks of birth fear...
